Parashat Toldot: Torah Portion Micrography Print (11"x14")
In Parashat (Torah portion) Toldot, we get the story of the twins Jacob and Esau. Esau is born first, but Jacob comes out with his hand wrapped around his brother’s ankle in a symbolic attempt to grab the birthright which comes with being the first-born. His name, יעקב/Ya’akov, comes from the Hebrew for ankle, עקב/ekev, after this first act. Jacob then convinces Esau to give up his birthright in exchange for food when Esau returns starving from a hunting trip.
When their father, Isaac, is on his deathbed, he calls for Esau to make his favorite soup and then he’ll bless Esau with the birthright; upon hearing this, Rebekah, the boys’ mother, calls to Jacob to gather supplies for the soup, and she cooks the soup for him, dresses Jacob in Esau’s clothing, and places a strip of goat skin on his arm so the near-blind Isaac will feel Jacob to be as hairy as his brother Esau is.
The trick works, and Jacob receives the birthright, much to Esau’s dismay; however, this is ultimately a good thing, as Jacob goes on to further the development of the Hebrew people while Esau marries out and becomes a thorn in his parents’ side. The two brothers eventually make up and become close again as adults. This piece shows Rebekah making the soup for Jacob to bring to Isaac.
