In Parashat (Torah Portion) Noach, we get the story of the Great Flood which God sent to wipe out the wickedness of the people of the land. Noah was “righteous in his generation,” though, so God commanded him to build an ark and fill it with animals and his family (his wife, his 3 sons, and his sons’ wives) so they could be saved. It then rained for forty days and forty nights, and after the rain receded, Noah sent out a raven… but it returned shortly. He waited a week and sent out a dove, and she also returned with nothing.

After another week, he sent the dove out again — this time, she returned with an olive branch, showing that the flood waters were beginning to recede and the treetops were beginning to emerge. He later sent out the dove a third time… and she never returned, signaling that the waters had receded enough for her to make a home. God then put a rainbow in the sky as a sign that never again would God send a flood to destroy mankind.
