Parashat (Torah Portion) Bo concludes the Ten Plagues. The first seven took place in the previous portion (Va’eira), but in this one, the Egyptians are struck with locusts, darkness, and the slaying of the first born.

The piece portrays a Hebrew mother standing over her first-born son. The boy is kneeling by a lamb, one which is admittedly luckier than the one whose blood was used to mark the doorposts so the Angel of Death, represented by the swirls in the sky, would pass over their home. She is holding a piece of matzah, a step ahead in the preparations to leave first thing the next morning after the Pharaoh discovers his son is gone and sends the Hebrews away, and tells them to hurry – so much so that they wouldn’t have time to let the bread rise before letting it bake on their backs in the desert sun on their way out.
